"I have been
crucified with Christ...." -Galatians 2:20
"I have been crucified with Christ;
it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for
me."
1. In what sense have
I been crucified with Christ?
a. It does
not mean at all my imitation of His death by crucifying
my self.
b. It does not mean
only my mystical identification with Christ at the time
of His death.
c. It primarily
means my Scriptural identification with Christ's death at
the time of my salvation. Through the arrival of the
Spirit I was united to Christ, His death and resurrection
so that my old life (old man) came to an abrupt end and I
became a new creation (new man).
Galatians
3:26-27 - For you are all sons of God through faith in
Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as were
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
1) It is a
death that happens experientially to me and the change
of before/after is noted by the words "no longer and
"now."
2) The death was
preceded by the experience of the convicting influence
of the law.
Galatians
2:19 - "For I through the law died to the law that I
might live to God."
2. What is true of my
life since my salvation when I died with Christ?
a. It is no
longer I who life. The "I" refers here to my old
man.
b. Christ lives in
me through His Spirit.
c. I continue to
live physically "in the flesh."
d. I live this life
by faith in Christ.

Scripture quoted is from the New King James
Version)
