"...you have put
off the old man...and have put on the new man...."
-Colossians 3:9-10
Do not lie to one another, since
you have put off the old man with his deeds,
10and have put on the new man who is renewed in
knowledge according to the image of Him who created
him.
1. Putting off the old
man/putting on the new man took place at the time of our
salvation
Colossians
2:12-13 - Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were
raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who
raised Him from the dead. 13And you, being dead
in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He
has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all
trespasses,
a. When we
were baptized into Christ's death, burial and
resurrection.
b. When we were
regenerated.
c. When we
believed.
d. When the Lord
forgave us.
2. The old man was our
former unregenerate life. Before salvation:
a. we were
sons of disobedience.
Colossians
3:6 - Because of these things the wrath of God is coming
upon the sons of disobedience.
b. we walked and
lived in lifestyles of sin.
Colossians
3:7 - In which you yourselves once walked when you lived
in them.
3. The new man is our
regenerate life since salvation. The new man is:
a. created by
the Lord.
Colossians
3:10 - And have put on the new man who is renewed in
knowledge according to the image of Him who created
him.
b. being
continually renewed in knowledge according to the image
of the Lord.
Colossians
3:10 - And have put on the new man who is renewed in
knowledge according to the image of Him who created
him.
c. indwelt by
Christ.
Colossians
3:11 - Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised
nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free,
but Christ is all and in all.
d. the elect of
God.
Colossians
3:12 - Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness,
longsuffering.
e. the beloved of
God.
Colossians
3:12 - Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness,
longsuffering.
f. holy.
Colossians
3:12 - Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness,
longsuffering.
4. The old
unregenerate life came to a final end at salvation. Having
thus put off our old man the believer is responsible to put
off the sinful actions associated with the old man. There
appears to be two stages:
a. First, in
those first days following salvation the believer puts
off the lifestyle sins of the old man.
Colossians
3:5-7 - Therefore put to death your members which are on
the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
6Because of these things the wrath of God is
coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7in
which you yourselves once walked when you lived in
them.
b. Second, now and
for the rest of our lives on earth we are responsible to
put off the behavioral sins of the old man.
Colossians
3:8-9 - But now you yourselves are to put off all these:
anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of
your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since
you have put off the old man with his
deeds.
5. Additionally, we
are responsible to put on new behaviors befitting our new
man. Notice the eight examples in Colossians 3:12-14:
Colossians
3:12-14 -Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness,
longsuffering; 13bearing with one another, and
forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against
another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
14But above all these things put on love, which
is the bond of perfection.

Scripture quoted is from the New King James
Version)
