"Oh come...let us
kneel before the LORD our Maker."
-Psalm
95:6
Oh come, let us worship and bow
down;
Let us kneel before the LORD our
Maker.
1. The striking
similarities and differences of Psalm 95 and 100 warn us of
a grave danger: that rebellion might be lurking right around
the corner from thanksgiving.
2. The Psalm is a call
directed to "us" who confess faith in God.
3. The Psalm is a call
to "come"; to congregate.
4. The Psalm is a call
to worship.
a. First,
worship must be joyful.
Psalm
95:1-2 - Oh come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout
joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. 2Let us
come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout
joyfully to Him with psalms.
b. Second, worship
must be reverent.
Psalm
95:6 -Oh come, let
us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our
Maker.
5. The call to worship
comes with reasons.
a. Jehovah is
the sovereign God and ruler over all.
Psalm
95:3 - For the LORD is the great God, and the great King
above all gods.
b. Jehovah is the
sovereign creator.
1) The
heights and depths.
Psalm
95:4 - In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
the heights of the hills are His also.
2) The sea and
land.
Psalm
95:5 - The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands
formed the dry land.
3) Humanity.
Psalm
95:6 -Oh come,
let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the
LORD our Maker.
C. Jehovah is the sovereign
Savior.
Psalm 95:7a - For
He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and
the sheep of His hand.
6. The call to worship comes with a
warning: "Do not depart from God!"
a. Hasten: The time to
respond to God in faith and humility is today.
Psalm 95:7b -
Today, if you will hear His voice:
b. Hear His voice: The object of
our faith is God's word.
Psalm 95:7 - For
He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and
the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His
voice:
c. Harden not your hearts: The
testing of God is a rebellious and selfish manifestation
of unbelief.
Psalm 95:8 - "Do
not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, as in the
day of trial in the wilderness."
Hebrews 3:12-14) - Beware, brethren, lest there be in any
of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the
living God; 13but exhort one another daily,
while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened
through the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we
have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning
of our confidence steadfast to the end.
