"...we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly...."
-Titus
2:12
Teaching us that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly in the present
age.
1. First, notice the
saving grace that appeared to us.
a. It has
appeared to all men.
Titus
2:11 - For the grace of God that brings salvation has
appeared to all men.
b. It has appeared
through the preaching of the word.
Titus
1:3 - But has in due time manifested His word through
preaching, which was committed to me according to the
commandment of God our Savior.
c. It appeared to
us individually when we were lost in sin.
Titus
3:3-4 - For we ourselves were also once foolish,
disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and
pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating
one another. 4But when the kindness and the
love of God our Savior toward man
appeared.
d. Notice the
detailed explanation of this salvation:
Titus
2:14 - Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us
from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own
special people, zealous for good works.
Titus 3:5-6 - Not by works of righteousness which we
have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the
Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out on us
abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
Titus 3:7 - that having been justified by His grace we
should become heirs according to the hope of eternal
life.
2. Second, notice that
this saving grace is also a teaching grace.
a. It teaches
the saved to appreciate their undeserved gift of
salvation and to express that appreciation to the Lord by
a godly life.
b. It teaches those
saved from sin to deny:
1)
ungodliness
2) worldly
lusts
c. It teaches those
saved from sin to live:
1)
soberly
2)
righteously
3)
godly
d. This grace
teaches each believer directly in the heart through the
renewing ministry of the Holy Spirit.
e. This teaching
grace is to be confirmed by the ministry of the local
church.
f. This teaching
grace is more than sufficient in this present
age:
1) No
matter how evil it gets.
2) Until the age
ends with the return of Christ.

Scripture quoted is from the New King James
Version)
