"For all that is in the
world...." -1
John 2:16
For all that is in the world; the
lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life; is not of the Father but is of the
world.
The world: a humanistic
place
1. Review: the world is an ungodly way
of life unique to each generation (age); organized by Satan;
embodied in humanity.
2. The ungodliness of the world is
inseparably linked to sinful humanity.
3. The world, in its totality is
sinful.
a. All of humanity are
sinners.
Romans 3:10-12, 23
- As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not
one; 11There is none who understands; there is
none who seeks after God. 12They have all
turned aside; they have together become unprofitable;
there is none who does good, no, not one."
23For all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God.
1 Corinthians 15:22 - For as in Adam all die, even so in
Christ all shall be made alive.
b. All of a human is sinful.
Genesis 5:3 - And
Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son
in his own likeness, after his image, and named him
Seth.
Genesis 6:5 - Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of
man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Genesis 8:21 - And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma.
Then the LORD said in His heart, "I will never again
curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination
of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again
destroy every living thing as I have done.
Jeremiah 17:9 - "The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately wicked; who can know it?"
Matthew 7:11 - "If you then, being evil, know how to
give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask
Him!"
Matthew 19:17 - So He said to him, "Why do you call Me
good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you
want to enter into life, keep the
commandments."
4. Notice the difference in the way
sin is evaluated by the world and by God.
a. God evaluates sin in terms
of nature.
b. The world evaluates sin in terms
of deeds.
5. Notice the evil trifecta of the
world's sin: (note parallel in Genesis 3:6)
Genesis 3:6 - So when
the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was
pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband
with her, and he ate.
a. The lust of the flesh
refers to the sinful desires that arise from the sinful
nature embedded in the body.
James 1:14-15 -
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own
desires and enticed. 15Then, when desire has
conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is
full-grown, brings forth death.
b. The lust of the eyes refers to
the sinful desires that arise from viewing something in
the world.
c. The pride of life refers to the
arrogant self will that characterizes humanity's way of
life.
Romans 1:30 - "Boasters
are those who hate God.
Backbiters,
haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of
evil things, disobedient to parents,
2 Timothy 3:2 - "Boasters" are
those who love self.
For men will be
lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters,
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy,
James 4:15-16 - "Boasting is
lack of submission to God's will.
Instead you
ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do
this or that." 16But now you boast in your
arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
6. All this sinfulness in the world of
humanity is simply "not of the Father."
7. Thankfully, "we are of God" by
God's grace; through the redemption and regeneration.
1 John 5:19 - We
know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the
sway of the wicked one.

Version)
