"...Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." -Romans 10:11

For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."

1. Consider the words "will not be put to shame":

a. Word meaning- to be disgraced or dishonored, thoroughly or completely.

b. Notice the original Hebrew words in Isaiah 28:16.
Isaiah 28:16 - Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily."

2. Consider a summary of this verse's historic context in Isaiah 28:

a. God's people (Israel) have been rebellious and wicked.
Isaiah 28:1, 7 - Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower which is at the head of the verdant valleys, to those who are overcome with wine! 7But they also have erred through wine, and through intoxicating drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, they are swallowed up by wine, they are out of the way through intoxicating drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

b. The people have mocked Isaiah's warnings of judgment and have convinced themselves that all will be well.
I
saiah 28:13-15 - But the word of the LORD was to them, "Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little," that they might go and fall backward, and be broken and snared and caught. 14Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scornful men, who rule this people who are in Jerusalem, 15because you have said, "We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hidden ourselves."

c. The Lord's judgment will bring a swift and sudden end of the wicked; and their "covenants of death" will provide no comfort.
Isaiah 28:17-21 - Also I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plummet; the hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place. 18Your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overflowing scourge passes through, then you will be trampled down by it. 19As often as it goes out it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass over, and by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report." 20For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it. 21For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim, He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon; that He may do His work, His awesome work, and bring to pass His act, His unusual act.

d. Yet, there is also a promise of salvation and for a restoration of righteousness for those who wait on God in faith.
Isaiah 28:16 - Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily.

3. Under the guidance of the Spirit, Isaiah zooms out of his own time and place to focus on a future judgment that will affect the whole earth.
Isaiah 28:22 - Now therefore, do not be mockers, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts, a destruction determined even upon the whole earth.
Consider the way people will be in panic mode and put to share at that time:

a. Luke 21:26 - "Men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken."

b. Revelation 6:16 - and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!"

4. In order to escape that final judgment Paul reminds us of the old promise of salvation along with additional revelation he had received from the Lord.

a. Christ is the righteousness the Lord said He would establish in Jerusalem and in the earth.
Romans 10:4 - For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

b. Faith in God must include faith in Christ.
Romans 10:9 - That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

c. This promise of salvation is now for both Jew AND gentile with no distinction.
Romans 10:12 - For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.

d. The one who believes will not be put to shame, but instead will be saved.
Romans 10:13 - For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."
