"Who will show us any good?" -Psalm 4:6

There are many who say, "Who will show us any good?" LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.

1. In the opinion of the world having and experiencing "good" is all-important.

a. "show us"

b. Why"

2. The "good" that many people want is a combination of things earthly and worldly.

a. Psalm 4:7 - You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the season that their grain and wine increased.

b. Luke 16:25 - "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.'"

3. While a few inherit or individually earn a life of plenty there are many "have-nots" who are desperately seeking for someone who can give them a share of the good life.

a. People are essentially followers.
John 6:26-27 - Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27"Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."

b. Consider Satan's strategy in Eden.

c. Who can help?
1 Samuel 22:6-7 - When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered; now Saul was staying in Gibeah under a tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants standing about him; 7then Saul said to his servants who stood about him, "Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?

4. Some, perhaps, among the many will express this materialistic desire in a tone of cynicism and despair.

a. What can extinguish the hope?

b. Imagine the disappointment.

5. The Psalmist, by his testimony, encourages us as God's people to seek God and His favor.

a. We experience a kind of gladness that cannot be derived from anything good in this world.
Psalm 4:7 - You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the season that their grain and wine increased.

b. Divine favor (the light of His face) is bestowed on the godly who please the Lord with a life of faith and trust.
Psalm 4:1-5 - Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. 2How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness and seek falsehood? Selah 3But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him. 4Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah 5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

Isaiah 59:1-2 - Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. 2But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.
