"...that the works of God should be
revealed in him." -John
9:3
Jesus answered, "Neither this man
nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be
revealed in him.
1. The account of the blind man sets
the stage for a theological lesson on the sovereignty of
God: though not always visible and recognized, God's
sovereign purposes are being accomplished in the world.
John 9:1-3 - Now as
Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.
2And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who
sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his
parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed
in him.
2. Consider how Christ, continuing the
theological lesson (with a sheep theme), disrupts the normal
pattern of thinking and reason to reveal to us the sovereign
works of both Father and Son. Using the disciples' question
format, consider the following:
a. "Lord Jesus, does the
Father foreknow who will come to You, or is that still
open and unknown to Him?"
John 10:29 - "My
Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all;
and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's
hand."
b. "Lord Jesus, how can people come
to you who haven't heard- can they find you on their own,
or will it work if they are sincere in their own
religious beliefs?"
John 10:16 - "And
other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also
I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will
be one flock and one shepherd."
c. "Lord Jesus, why don't people
believe in you even though they have heard the Gospel- is
it because of ignorance, or because the missionary didn't
properly befriend them first?"
John 10:16 - "But
you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I
said to you."
d. "Lord Jesus, why did you die- to
gain sympathy for your cause, or to become a model of
self-sacrifice for all to follow?"
John 10:11-12 -
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life
for the sheep. 12But a hireling, he who is not
the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the
wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf
catches the sheep and scatters them."
e. "Lord Jesus, who is responsible
for killing You- the Jews, or Pilate?"
John 10:18 - "No
one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have
power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.
This command I have received from My
Father."
3. The order of events in the blind
man's experience is the same in all those who are touched by
the sovereign works of God.
a.
John 9:3 - Jesus
answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but
that the works of God should be revealed in
him."
b.
John 9:35-38a -Jesus heard that they had cast him out;
and when He had found him, He said to him, "Do you
believe in the Son of God?" 36He answered and
said, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"
37And Jesus said to him, "You have both seen
Him and it is He who is talking with you."
38aThen he said, "Lord, I
believe!"
c. John
9:38b -
And he worshiped
Him.
