"Who do the crowds say
who do
you say that I am?" -Luke 9:18-20
And it happened, as He was alone
praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them,
saying, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" 1
9So they answered and said, "John the Baptist, but
some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets
has risen again."
20He said to them, "But who do you say that I
am?" Peter answered and said, "The Christ of
God."
1. Introduction: Remember that this
kind of question does not reflect ignorance in the
omniscient Christ; but, rather, the condescension of deity
to relate to humanity.
2. How do the crowds form their
opinion of Jesus?
a. Uninformed
speculation.
b. Blindly following blind
leaders.
Matthew 15:14 -
"Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And
if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a
ditch."
3. The crowds have a very human
understanding of Jesus.
a. Human in His
origin.
b. Human in His mission. Consider
two modern views:
1) Reform and rule
without redemption. A conservative activist prophet
who can stand up to the opposition.
2) Acceptance and love without
atonement. A gentle teacher who promotes pacifism and
tolerance.
4. How do YOU know who Jesus is?
Matthew 16:17 - Jesus
answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,
for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My
Father who is in heaven."
Because of:
a. Blessing- the grace of
God.
b. Revelation- Biblical and
Spiritual.
5. You have an enlightened
understanding of Jesus.
a. You understand His
heavenly origin.
b. You understand the redemptive
purpose of His first coming.

Scripture quoted is from the New King James
Version)
