"...Jesus, Son of the Most High God?" -Mark 5:7

And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me."

1. Mark seems to have had a youthful awe for Jesus' authority over the demonic world.

2. Remember that, as Mark, our emphasis should be on Christ, not the spirit-world.
Colossians 2:18 - Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.

3. Consider the nature of demonic activity:

a. Demons are unclean spirits.

b. Demons are abusive to humanity.

c. Demons seem to have different jobs.

1) Rural fear.
Mark 5:15 - Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

2) Urban deceit.
Acts 16:16-21 - Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." 18And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour. 19But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities. 20And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, "These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; 21and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe."

4. Notice the behavior of the demons in the presence of Christ.

a. The demons worshipped Christ.
Mark 5:6 - When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.

b. The demons know:
Mark 5:7 - And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me."

1) Who God is: the Most high.
Isaiah 14:14 - "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High."

2) Who Jesus is: the Son of God.

c. The demons submit to the Son's sovereign rule.
Mark 5:7, 10-12 - And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me." 10Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them."

5. In contrast to the demonic activity, notice Christ's divine activity:

a. Brings compassion.
Mark 5:19 - However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you."

b. Did great things.
Ephesians 2:1-10 - And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
