"...the LORD has
brought you out with a mighty hand...from the house of
bondage..."
-Deuteronomy
7:8
"but because the LORD loves you,
and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your
fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty
hand,
and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of
Pharaoh king of Egypt."
1. The mighty hand of
the Lord delivered His covenant people (those in Abraham)
from:
a. the house
of bondage.
1) A life
of inescapable hardship/abuse.
Exodus
1:13-14 - So the Egyptians made the children of
Israel serve with rigor. 14And they made
their lives bitter with hard bondage; in mortar, in
brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All
their service in which they made them serve was with
rigor.
2) A life of
fear.
Deuteronomy
28:58-60, 64-68 - "If you do not carefully observe
all the words of this law that are written in this
book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome
name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59then the LORD
will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary
plagues; great and prolonged plagues; and serious and
prolonged sicknesses. 60Moreover He will
bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which
you were afraid, and they shall cling to you."
64 "Then the LORD will scatter you among
all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other,
and there you shall serve other gods, which neither
you nor your fathers have known; wood and stone.
65And among those nations you shall find no
rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting
place; but there the LORD will give you a trembling
heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul.
66Your life shall hang in doubt before you;
you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of
life. 67In the morning you shall say, 'Oh,
that it were evening!' And at evening you shall say,
'Oh, that it were morning!' because of the fear which
terrifies your heart, and because of the sight which
your eyes see. 68And the LORD will take you
back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to
you, 'You shall never see it again.' And there you
shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male and
female slaves, but no one will buy
you."
b. the hand of
Pharaoh.
Exodus 1:15-16 -
Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of
whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the
other Puah; 16and he said, "When you do the
duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on
the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him;
but if it is a daughter, then she shall
live."
2. In the greater
deliverance of humanity from sin the Lord delivers His
covenant people (those in Christ) from:
a. the
bondage of sin.
1) But,
sinners are deceived sinners and therefore unaware
they are in bondage.
John
8:31-36 - Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed
Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples
indeed. 32And you shall know the truth, and
the truth shall make you free." 33They
answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have
never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, 'You
will be made free'?" 34Jesus answered them,
"Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is
a slave of sin. 35And a slave does not
abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
36Therefore if the Son makes you free, you
shall be free indeed."
2)
In contrast
to the "good" (God said so) life that man originally
experienced, a life of sin is an inescapable life of
abuse and hardship.
Romans
6:15-17 - What then? Shall we sin because we are not
under law but under grace? Certainly not!
16Do you not know that to whom you present
yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves
whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of
obedience leading to righteousness? 17But
God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet
you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to
which you were delivered.
Ephesians
2:1-3 - And you He made alive, who were dead in
trespasses and sins, 2in which you once
walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the
spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
3among whom also we all once conducted
ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the
desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by
nature children of wrath, just as the
others.
2
Peter 2:18-19 - For when they speak great swelling
words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of
the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have
actually escaped from those who live in error.
19While they promise them liberty, they
themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a
person is overcome, by him also he is brought into
bondage.
3) The bondage
of sin is also characterized by a constant fear.
Hebrews
2:14-15 - Inasmuch then as the children have partaken
of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the
same, that through death He might destroy him who had
the power of death, that is, the devil,
15and release those who through fear of
death were all their lifetime subject to
bondage.
b. Behind all the
abuse and hardship there is an evil hand. There is an
evil person: Satan. The Lord's mighty hand delivers His
people from Satan's rule of terror.
1
Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour.
1 John 3:8 - He who sins is of the devil, for the devil
has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son
of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of
the devil.
1 John 4:4 - You are of God, little children, and have
overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than
he who is in the world.

Scripture quoted is from the New King James
Version)
