"...because the LORD loves you...(He) has brought you out with a mighty hand..." -Deuteronomy 7:8

"but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand,
and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt."

1. Consider the relevance for us Christians today to reflect on God's love for Israel.

a. We are loved with the same divine love.
John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

b. We are blessed by our participation in Israel's covenants.
Galatians 3:7-9 - Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, "In you all the nations shall be blessed." 9So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

2. Consider the why and wherefore of God's will to set His love on Israel- and us.

a. His love was not a reaction. He was not impressed or inspired by Israel's quantity or quality. Rather, His love was an action of His own sovereign will.
Deuteronomy 7:7; 26:5 - "The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples." 26:5 "And you shall answer and say before the LORD your God: 'My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous.'"
Romans 5:8) - But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:10, 19 - In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 19 We love Him because He first loved us.

b. Notice the theocentric (God-centered) purposes of divine love.
Deuteronomy 7:6 - "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth."
Ephesians 1:5, 9 - Having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 9having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself.

c. God's love is selective.
Deuteronomy 7:6 - "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth."
Romans 9:10-13 - And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11(for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." 13As it is written, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."
1 Corinthians 1:26-28 - For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are.

3. God confirmed His love with a covenant.
Deuteronomy 7:8 - "But because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt."
Hebrews 6:13-18 - For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, "Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you." 15And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.

4. God's love is unchanging and constant.
Deuteronomy 7:8 - "But because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt."

5. The right and reasonable response for God's people is to love Him.
Deuteronomy 7:9 - "Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments."
Deuteronomy 6:5-6 - "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart."
John 14:15 - "If you love Me, keep My commandments."
