"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners...." -1 Timothy 1:15

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

1. Let us not forget that Christ literally and historically came into the world.

a. He came as the eternal, pre-existent Son of God.
Romans 8:32 - He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

b. He came through the miracle of the virgin birth, thus being both God and man.
Luke 1:34-35 - Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" 35And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
John 8:41-42 - "You do the deeds of your father." Then they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father; God." 42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.

c. He came at great personal sacrifice.
Philippians 2:5-7 - Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

d. He came with a commitment to fully accomplish the specific work His father gave Him to do.
John 6:37-40 - "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."
Hebrews 10:9-10 - Then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

2. Notice the specific purpose of Christ in His first coming: to save.

a. It is the gospel purpose.
Luke 2:10-11 - Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."

b. It is the purpose of divine love.
John 3:16-17 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

3. Thankfully, for us, Christ came to save sinners. Sin entered the human race at the time of the Fall. To understand how thoroughly sin has infected the individual human, consider the condition of Paul's former fellow Pharisees.

a. The human intellect does not understand who Christ is.
John 8:43-44 - "Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."

b. Human emotion hates Christ.
John 7:7 - "The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil."

c. The human will chooses not to seek Christ.
John 5:40 - "But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life."
