"...our old man was crucified with Him...." -Romans 6:6

Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

1. First, it is crucial that we understand and identify the "old man."

a. It is not the sin nature. Those who insist that it is the sin nature have various interpretations of its death:
1) Gradual eradication, resulting in the awkward task of crucifying one's own sin nature.

2) Immediate eradication, resulting in self-delusion and redefinition of sin.

3) Positional eradication, resulting in a huge disparity between position and experience with the believer responsible for bridging the gap.

b. It is simply the unregenerate man.
Ephesians 4:22 - That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.
Colossians 3:9 - Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds.

1) Paul is clear that a person dies.
Romans 6:2, 7, 8, 11 - Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 7For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him. 11Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2) Paul makes a clear distinction between the person and the sinful nature.
Romans 6:2, 7, 11 - Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 7For he who has died has been freed from sin. 11Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3) This unregenerate person is spiritual dead, enslaved by sin, and depraved in its activity. It is a person without God and the effects of His grace.

2. The old man (unregenerate person) is crucified with Christ.

a. This death takes place at salvation when the believer is baptized into Christ, and into His death.
Romans 6:3-5 - Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.
1 Corinthians 12:13 - For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body; whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free; and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

b. This death is Spiritual, not merely positional. In other words it is enacted within us by His Spirit.

c. This death is final, not gradual.
Romans 6:10-11 - For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. Notice the results of the death of the old man (unregenerate man):

a. The believer is a new man.
Romans 6:4, 11 -Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 11Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Ephesians 4:24 - And that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Colossians 3:10) - And have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.

b. The sinful body loses its controlling influence.
Romans 6:6 - Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

c. The believer has been freed from the dominion of sin.
Romans 6:6, 7, 18. 22 - Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7For he who has died has been freed from sin. 18And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 22But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
