"Father, I desire that they... may be with Me where I am...." -John 17:24

"Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am,
that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world."

1. Because the sovereign Father and Son are one, their desires are one.

2. Notice that Jesus prays specifically for:

a. Those given to Him by the Father's sovereign choice.
John 17:9 - "I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours."
John 6:37 - "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out."

b. Those who believe.
John 17:20 - "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word."

3. Observe the sovereign desire of the Son:

a. That we may be with Him where He is.
John 14:2-3 - "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

b. That we may be eternally amazed as we continually behold the magnificent glory of Christ.

4. Consider what Jesus must do, in cooperation with the Father to whom He prays, in order that His people may be with Him in His glory.

a. He must die as a sacrifice, bearing their sins.
John 10:14-16 - "I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep."
Isaiah 53:5-6 - But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

b. He must rise from the dead.
John 10:17-18 - "Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father."

c. He must give eternal life to those He has redeemed.
John 17:2 - "As You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him"

d. He must keep and sanctify them during their stay in the world.
John 17:11, 12, 15, 17 - "Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 15I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."

e. He must make them one in the Father and Son.
John 17:21-23 - "That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me."

f. He must resurrect their sinful bodies and give them new ones.
John 6:40 - "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

g. "In short," He must overthrow Satan and overcome the world.
John 12:31 - "Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out."
John 16:33 - "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

5. Will you be there with Him beholding His glory?
