"...we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man." -1 Corinthians 15:49

And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

1. We have born the image of Adam, the m an of dust.

a. It is a human body of flesh and blood.
1 Corinthians 15:39, 50 - All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. 50Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.

b. Its building blocks are the chemical elements of the earth.

c. It is a natural body.
1 Corinthians 15:42-44 - So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

2. Salvation in Christ does not merely reverse the curse. It puts us in a position and condition better than Adam.
Romans 8:29 - For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

3. Through salvation and sanctification believers have already begun to bear the image of Christ in their spirits.
Colossians 3:10 - And have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.

4. By the way, why is Christ called the "last Adam" (45) and "Second Man" (47)?

a. They hold similar positions as heads of humanity.
1 Corinthians 15:22 - For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

b. In contrast: while Adam is earthly; Christ is heavenly.
1 Corinthians 15:47 - The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.

c. In contrast: while Adam was a "living being"; Christ is a life-giving spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:45 - And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

5. Take courage gentle believer- shortly you shall bear the image of the heavenly Man.

a. We will gain a spiritual body.
1 Corinthians 15:44 - It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

b. The event which effects this change is the resurrection of the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:21, 51 - For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 51Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed.

c. Our resurrection will take place at Christ's coming.
1 Corinthians 15:23, 52 - But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. 52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
